How a $250,000 Last-to-Leave Grocery Store Challenge Ended in a Million-Dollar Restock

Open on YouTube ↗
Overview

MrBeast bought a grocery store, filled it with shoppers he says were strangers, and told them that whoever left last would win $250,000. The video follows that contest for 67 days. The store slowly emptied through fatigue, homesickness, sabotage and cash offers. It ended not with a winner but with the remaining four agreeing to a new, larger challenge.

Setting the Trap: A Half-Price Sale and a Red Line

According to MrBeast, right after buying the store he announced a 50%-off sale on everything. That drew a large crowd of ordinary shoppers expecting cheap groceries. Once they were inside, he told them they were in a MrBeast video and that the last person to leave would take the $250,000 displayed in the store. Some had never heard of him. Asked how long they would stay, people answered "till I'm the last one in here," "end of the year," and "as long as it takes."

Jobs were the first obstacle. One recent college graduate had no job and nothing to lose. Others did. One woman's manager appeared and insisted she had to come to work. People who couldn't or wouldn't compete were offered free groceries on the way out, and many took that deal immediately. The rule was simple: stepping over the red line at the exit meant elimination.

Contestants could use anything inside the store and decide for themselves whether to share. By the first night, 33 people remained.

Day One: Alliances and Forts

The early strategy was to grab necessities and claim territory. Alliances formed within hours. One group of four swore not to quit on each other. Several teams staked out distinct bases:

  • Fort Freezy: a group in the back by the freezers and meat. Its members hung a tripwire-style "security system" that would wake them if anyone intruded. They said they were open to bartering meat with others.
  • The manager's office team: a group that took over an empty office and stocked it with a refrigerator and a full shopping cart, effectively locking themselves in.
  • A father and son: a two-person alliance next to the office. The son expected to leave soon because of school and work.
  • The Innovators: a team in the produce section. One member was 11 weeks pregnant.
  • The Dream Team: a group in the milk aisle.

The first night brought practical problems. Phones were dying, and the store had no phone chargers. By Day 3, people had improvised sleeping setups: two full beds in one corner, someone sleeping on a shelf, and a napkin-stuffed pillow. One older contestant complained that the younger people weren't sharing beds and had left them in chairs. Others found the cold and lack of sleep unbearable and went home.

The remaining contestants worked at staying active. One group built a workout station with a makeshift bench. Another rigged a shower by hanging a hose behind a door. By Day 4, most phones were dead. Family members began coming to the front windows just to wave through the glass. One girlfriend said she visited "every other day" because she was bored. By MrBeast's count, more than half the competition was already gone after four days.

Night Five: One Popped Floaty Starts a Riot

On Night 5, a contestant named Xavian (also called "Xay") snuck into the Dream Team's fort and popped a pool floaty someone was using as a bed. Josh, in the produce aisle, saw it and told Gunner, the floaty's owner, who complained about a "green-jumpsuit little man" stabbing floaties "unprovoked." When Xavian realized Josh had reported him, he turned on the produce aisle.

A shouting match followed, with both sides calling the other childish. Others then took the fight to Xavian's base, and the night descended into what MrBeast called "pure anarchy on the sales floor," including the destruction of someone's Pop-Tarts. Asked afterward whether he just wanted chaos, Xavian called it "organized chaos." The person questioning him disagreed.

The riot pushed people out. An Innovators member said that competing required your whole heart, and theirs no longer would be in it. A Dream Team member said things were getting "wild" and left too.

The Store's "Parents" Leave, and the Courtesy Ends

After a calmer day, the mood was lifted partly by Harry and Celestine, an older couple who had become the store's unofficial parents. Contestants gathered to hear Harry sing one of his own old songs. The couple then left, saying they needed to get back to their kids and thanking everyone. The pregnant Innovators member also left. She was three months along and had a three-year-old and a husband at home.

According to the narration, everyone had been courteous enough to let the pregnant contestant and the older couple sleep undisturbed. With them gone, the manager's office team decided that courtesy was over. At 3 and 4 a.m. they banged on surfaces and set off beeping and ringing noises. One contestant left immediately, and the team announced that nobody would sleep for the rest of the week. The noise sent a contestant named Tino "over the edge," and he left.

Tino's departure pushed Fort Freezy and the Dream Team into a merged alliance. MrBeast said it looked like an "unstoppable force." Soon after, Josh carelessly stepped on the red line during a celebration and was out, calling it his own mistake. The noise campaign continued, and another contestant said they couldn't take it anymore.

The noise had an unintended side effect. A contestant named Juan could somehow sleep through all of it. He got up very early and gave the noisemakers "their own medicine," thumping and singing "Cielito Lindo" while they tried to sleep. Juan had been unproblematic until then, so people couldn't tell whether it was strategy or boredom. One contestant said it was hard to be mad at him.

Missing Their Children

MrBeast singled out time away from children as one of the hardest parts of the challenge. Juan had a son, Angel, in the store with him, and sent Angel home to keep competing. MrBeast said he could hardly believe it and took it as a sign of how determined Juan was for his family. Other parents talked about guilt that grew the longer they stayed, and about feeling they were missing out despite the "life-changing money."

The narration also noted that being alone might be the better strategy, since alliances depended heavily on each other. As MrBeast put it, one bad seed can bring down a community.

The Basketball Frame-Up

When MrBeast built out the store, he added burners for cooking and a basketball hoop. He described the hoop as seemingly the only thing keeping people entertained, and guessed many would leave without it. Xavian decided to take the ball. His plan was to plant it in the dumpster belonging to a contestant named Robbie, so that anyone who went looking would blame Robbie.

The next morning was silent, which only made it obvious something was wrong. Contestants questioned each other without results. A contestant named Autumn had watched Xavian throw the ball out, and she told the others. When confronted, Xavian denied it and said he'd been asleep. Autumn then backed off her claim, saying she hadn't physically seen him do it. That retreat made her look like the liar. Others told her everyone, now including Xay, was against her.

Autumn became isolated. People walked away when she approached. Xavian gloated that they hated her not because she lied, but because he had them hating her for telling the truth. He openly embraced being the store's villain. Even a contestant who liked him said they didn't trust him.

Autumn soon left, saying three weeks was too long for any mom to be away from her child. Watching her go home to her son, Robbie decided that 20 days away from his daughter was already too long. He said he had genuinely thought he could win but wouldn't spend three months missing his kid's life. Xavian claimed it all as part of "a calculated plan."

Other pressures were building. MrBeast noted that much of the food would go bad within 30 days, and the bread had already spoiled. One contestant was sleeping comfortably because, as he explained, the military had made him sleep in fighting holes and on bare metal bed frames. Another described quitting a job to compete and missing their son, concluding that money can't replace time.

The Burner Heist

Because much of the food needed cooking, the Dream Team and Fort Freezy targeted the burners. They worried that holding the burners would make them obvious suspects, so they planned to pin the theft on Xay. After a contestant named Fatima left and the group reached the Top 10, they staged a "Top 10 ceremony" in the back as a distraction.

While everyone lined up "shortest to tallest, starting with Xay," a contestant named Colin stayed behind under the pretext of finishing a shower. He took the office team's burner, which had been left in the open, and the one hidden on a top shelf in the bread aisle. He could not find Juan's, the only one whose location they didn't know. His allies stalled the group while he searched. Contestants were then interviewed one at a time in the walk-in freezer, with Xavian first, so he would be the first one back on the floor and the obvious suspect.

It worked. Eldin's team found their burner missing, everyone except Juan had lost theirs, and suspicion fell on Xavian, who swore he had taken nothing. MrBeast described Bryce and Colin's plan as apparently successful.

At this point MrBeast announced that each Top 10 contestant who left from then on would receive $5,000 in cash and a gift box from neighborhood businesses, through the video's sponsor. Several people took it immediately, including the last member of the Innovators and a contestant named Chris. One said that if they were going to take a bribe, they'd rather take it sooner than later. One of those leaving was reunited with family just outside.

23:41

Escalation Against Juan

Privately, Xavian worked out that Colin had been the last to walk back for the ceremony and figured he'd been set up. He said he was annoyed he hadn't thought of the plan himself, because it was smart.

Juan now held the only burner and refused to share it. The alliance decided to push him to his breaking point. Declaring "we can't eat, you can't eat," they took a secret stash for themselves and then moved as much food out of the store as possible, saying it would be donated. Juan protested that the food was for everybody. Gunner went further, taking Juan's pots and pans and hurling them, telling him he'd be "going out next." Juan answered that he could live on crackers and beef jerky. The group then started tearing the store apart, and Juan isolated himself for the rest of the day.

Xavian responded with nearly 24 hours of banging, taunting the others about their earlier bravado. The Dream Team eventually approached him with an apology and an offer to stop making things miserable. Xavian said that was what he had wanted all along, but he refused to reach an agreement. One person in the exchange argued that he had simply used the others' own strategy better than they had.

Voting for Hardship: Boarded Windows

MrBeast then asked who wanted the video made harder. Five people raised their hands. On Day 30, crews boarded up the front windows, cutting off what MrBeast called a major source of encouragement: seeing loved ones through the glass. One contestant apologized tearfully to their family as the boards went up. Another said the change didn't hurt their group much, since their families had been coming every day anyway.

Xavian decided to leave. He said he felt he had shown every side of himself, "the good, the bad, the ugly," and didn't want to stay and show more of the ugly. He didn't go quietly. He stole the Dream Team's sleeping bags on his way out and taunted that they would never beat him. The Dream Team fished the bags back in and returned the burners, since the plan had served its purpose. A contestant named G-Frank, saying it had been over a month, also left, leaving a Top 6.

Boredom and a $50,000 Buyout

With the conflict gone, the real challenge became what contestants called "crippling boredom." They slept as much as possible, tore down shelves, cleaned, played games, and toilet-papered the store. One said nothing had really happened in two weeks and probably wouldn't. At Day 40, they reflected that they hadn't seen the outside world or hugged anyone in that time. They said they had no plan for how long they'd stay and were simply waiting for MrBeast to return.

When he did, he had them elect a leader. Jackson won the vote. MrBeast said he was convinced they were "willing to die in this grocery store" and would start paying people to leave. He gave Jackson $50,000 that Jackson could not keep but could offer to others. Jackson could pay one person $50,000, split it between two people, or offer nothing, but if no one left, no one got the money.

One contestant immediately offered to leave for the full $50,000. MrBeast suggested trying to get two people out instead, but Juan and others refused $25,000. MrBeast pointed out that only one person would win and some of those refusing would go home with nothing. Jackson ended up offering $30,000, and one contestant accepted. Counting the $5,000 sponsor payment, that person left with $35,000, calling it "the best day of my life." The rest of the offer was withdrawn. Five of the original 100 remained.

The Red Button: The Store Cut in Half

Loyalties started to wobble. One contestant said they would stick with Colin but could join "the brothers" if needed. Another said there was no trusting anyone anymore. MrBeast then placed a red button in the middle of the store, saying one press would make the video harder.

Most were hesitant. Juan said he didn't want to affect anybody, "except for Colin." Colin argued that the others would happily live there forever and that pressing it was best for "the three of us." Once Jackson agreed, Colin pressed it.

The consequence was a new red line painted across the middle of the store, with five minutes to grab supplies from the far side. Porta-potties replaced the bathroom. The contestants lost half their space along with access to sunlight, the shower, and the bathroom. They talked about washing dishes with Coke Zero and brushing their teeth with bottled water.

Less than 12 hours after the line went up, Colin rubbed his hand on it. He called it a heat-of-the-moment thing and was eliminated. His last words: you spend 50 days in a grocery store with one goal, which is not to touch the red line. Four contestants remained. Everything on the far side, including dairy and cheese, was removed and donated. MrBeast said it would help more than 10,000 people in need.

The four adapted. Reyhan found water in the produce section's lines. One contestant and Juan tore the fixture apart to get fresh water, and the group set up a bucket bath. When MrBeast placed a second red button on the floor, they agreed not to touch it and called it "cursed." By then they described their days as working out, cooking, making friends, and "friendly competition," playing cornhole, volleyball, and RC cars. One said it felt like childhood all over again.

A sponsored soccer segment followed, in which the contestants took shots on a goalkeeper for World Cup tickets. A bystander joked that a winner might still be stuck in the store when the tournament came around. Asked again whether anyone wanted to make things harder, all four said no. MrBeast left saying he'd see them in a week for "a million-dollar decision."

Day 67: The Million-Dollar Decision

The announcement dominated the next week. One contestant said people would do "crazy stuff" for a million dollars. Another said they would want to give the money back to the community. In the middle of this, the group threw Juan a birthday party with a cake, a piñata they had made, and a homemade Pin the Tail on the Donkey.

On Day 67, MrBeast laid out a million dollars and an offer. The last-to-leave contest would end, he would restock the store, and the challenge would become eating everything in it, for a $1,000,000 prize. That quadrupled the prize pool and, as he put it, turned them "from enemies into teammates." When someone raised concerns about gaining weight, he promised a gym, a nutritionist, a personal trainer, beds, and showers. One contestant named a wife and two kids as what made the decision hard. Another said an opportunity like this would never come again.

Jackson voted to stock the store. Juan said "stay in the store." The others said "stock it." MrBeast declared the original video over, the prize pool raised to a million dollars, and the store to be restocked. He closed with "See ya in a year." The video does not show how the eating challenge turns out or who, if anyone, wins.
