Four Strangers, One Grocery Store, 4.3 Million Calories: How the "Grocery Boys" Ate Their Way to $1 Million

Open on YouTube ↗
Overview

This MrBeast video picks up where an earlier challenge left off. Four men who had refused to leave a grocery store for 67 days were offered a new deal: Jimmy would restock the whole store, and if they ate everything in it, they would split a $1,000,000 prize. The video follows Eldin, Reyhan, Jackson and Juan for the rest of their stay, which the video puts at more than 200 days in the store overall. Food spoiled, injuries happened, morale dipped, and a series of side challenges sped up or slowed down the work of eating through a store Jimmy describes as "an entire city's worth of food."

The Setup and the Rules

The store held 4.3 million calories. Jimmy notes that if the four men each ate 2,000 calories a day, finishing would take them more than a year. One contestant guessed early on, "This could take, like, a year."

The key rule tied waste to money. Every calorie that went bad would cost one dollar from the prize pool. Jimmy points out that if a little under a quarter of the store spoiled, the whole prize would be gone. Staff watched every part of the store around the clock so that nothing could be thrown away unnoticed. As in the original challenge, the contestants could not step on or over a red line.

Their first act was an inventory: 105 loaves of bread, 34 cans of pears, 96 V8s, 271 cans of tuna, 400 jars of seasoning, 22 cans of salsa, and much more. Jimmy also says that across the store, unhealthy products were replaced with healthier versions, giving Froot Loops swapped for protein cereal as an example. He brought in a personal trainer, John, to work with them daily.

Fighting Spoilage First

The group quickly agreed that produce would go bad first and made it the priority. Within minutes, blueberries spilled onto the floor. Jimmy valued them at about 80 calories, or $80. Someone suggested throwing them away, but the others refused and ate them. The plan for the first days was to freeze the vegetables and juice the fruit. Jackson made fresh orange juice, Reyhan and Juan cut and froze cauliflower, and nearly the entire bread aisle went into the freezer because bread is so calorie-dense.

The first dinner was cheesesteaks, chosen partly because it used up a lot of peppers. Day one ended with about 10,000 calories eaten out of 4.3 million. By day three the contestants admitted they had not eaten even 1% of the store. They decided to get foods they disliked, such as onions, out of the way early so the harder stretch later would feel easier. A careful tally put them at 65,941 calories.

Exercise became part of the strategy. The thinking, as they described it, was that burning more calories would let them eat more.

Roles, Routines, and Eldin's Slump

The narration describes how the group settled into roles. Juan opened every day by greeting the fans gathered outside the store. Jackson turned food into juices and smoothies. Reyhan became the cook and said he had been reading cookbooks at night to work out how to make 4.3 million calories taste good. The group is called "a well-oiled machine."

Eldin struggled. He said it was "kinda sad" being in there so long, four men against 4.3 million calories, and that it made him want to go back to Last to Leave. The narration says he was sleeping in, missing workouts, and at times refusing to eat. Jimmy came in to work out with the group and try to motivate him. After more than a week, Jimmy said no one had thrown away a single calorie and the prize was still at $1 million, which he admitted was better than he expected.

Day 10: The Blindfold Cart Challenge and the Bodybuilders

On day 10, Jimmy and his crew put on blindfolds and pushed shopping carts around the store. The contestants had one minute to call out directions from above, telling the crew what to load. Whatever ended up in the carts, "we" would help eat. Jimmy said a well-directed run could load something like 100,000 calories. It went badly. The crew crashed into things, someone took someone else's cart, and Nolan wandered off while being shouted at to take "the whole box." Jimmy's verdict was "Y'all are horrible at listening."

The "we" turned out to mean ten bodybuilders brought in to eat the carts' contents, but the carts were nearly empty. The narration says the bodybuilders didn't make the impact the group had hoped for. By day 10 they had eaten almost 200,000 calories, mostly produce, which they had nearly cleared, but they were still under 5% of the store.

Day 11: A Hundred Days Inside

Day 11 was also the contestants' 100th day living in the store, counting the original challenge, and Jimmy's birthday. To mark it, Jimmy brought a shopping cart holding $40,000 and gave $10,000 to a family member of each contestant. One named his wife, whose birthday was the next day. Others sent the money to their parents, telling them to take a vacation, or wished a mother happy birthday.

The narration says the isolation had made the four "a family of their own." Juan made a Mother's Day sign. Reyhan took the lead on cooking for the group. Eldin became the store barber.

Days 20–30: Burning Calories for Donation

On day 20, Jimmy announced a ten-day challenge built around the Fitbit Air trackers the contestants wore. Every calorie they burned over the next ten days would be removed from the store as food, cooked, and given to people in need. Jimmy told the trainer to make sure no one overexerted themselves, since the contestants were "heavily incentivized," and said the contestants had to stop when the trainer told them to.

The gap within the group became obvious. By 6 a.m. the others had been working out for hours while Eldin slept. Eldin later said he was "kinda in defeat" because everyone was burning more than him, even though he was trying as hard as he could. John's explanation was simple: the others were getting about two extra hours on him every day. Teammates teased him for lying down while about 5,000 calories behind. The others were burning more than 4,000 calories a day. The narration notes that the oldest of the group, Juan, was leading, and at one point had been jumping for about five hours.

The Food-Safety Setback

Around this point the group proudly told Jimmy that zero food had gone bad. Jimmy replied, "That's not what the food-safety expert told me," and introduced Quinn, a food-safety specialist. Quinn showed them vegetables that had been in the freezer too long and were no longer safe to eat. The contestants protested that they looked fine. Jimmy said this was exactly what he paid her for, because he couldn't have anyone getting sick.

The spoiled food came to 6,614 calories, so $6,614 came out of the prize pool. One contestant started to blame another for not watching expiration dates, and another cut that off: "We're a team." One of them said it "really kicks your butt" to work so hard not to lose money and then lose it anyway.

To lift morale, Jimmy brought in reinforcements. Alison, a contestant from another video being filmed, in which she is chained to a random person every five days, was chained to Juan for five days and helped eat. The contestants credited her with eating as much as they did.

On day 30, the total came in at 201,768 calories burned over ten days, including Alison's. The group cooked about 200,000 calories of meals on site. Reyhan explained why this mattered to him personally: he and his brother Eldin came from Europe as immigrants, did not have much money or food at first, and now could give back to the community that had given them so much. Jimmy reported that more than 300 people were fed. Then Alison was chained to a new stranger and left, and the store "just got quiet."

Homesickness, Friction, and the Bird Feeder

The middle stretch was the hardest emotionally. One contestant described his son asking, "Daddy, can you cross the red line?" and having to answer, "I'll be home soon." He said he walked the aisles knowing that wasn't true.

Reyhan's answer was to push the pace. They were eating four meals and four smoothies a day, and he reported they were "knocking out" 37,000 calories a day. He said the refrigerators and freezers were looking clear, while others in the shot pointed out they were still full. The narration says his "obsession" eventually had him biting off more than the group could chew. In one argument he cooked a huge batch of potatoes, Eldin said he couldn't eat them all, and Reyhan told him to stop "acting like a baby," arguing that anything not eaten would come out of the prize pool. The narration is blunt: there were still millions of calories left, and they weren't leaving any time soon.

Reyhan, "desperate for something to ease his mind," built a bird feeder out of seeds from the store. He said he sat by the dock every morning listening to birds. He spent most of a day waiting, and no birds came.

Juan Learns to Read and Write

One storyline came from Juan. He explained that Reyhan once asked him at the checkout whether he could read English. He couldn't read or write, so Reyhan started giving him small spelling tests, encouraging him not to get frustrated when he got words wrong. Juan said he could now make short sentences and was getting better all the time. By the end he had written Reyhan a long thank-you letter. Reyhan said receiving it was one of his best moments and he would keep it for the rest of his life. The narration presents this as a reminder to Reyhan, who had been focused on himself and his own family, that helping another person, sometimes a total stranger, can be the greatest reward.

Jimmy also announced merch shirts with each contestant's face. He said this came from viewers of the first grocery store video asking how they could help the contestants earn extra money. Half the proceeds from each shirt go to the contestant on it. A large crowd outside received shirts, and Jimmy said this was how many people came to the store every day to see them.

Day 40: Shopping-Cart Football

On day 40, Jimmy brought in grass and built a mini football field. A contestant would be thrown a football and had to catch it in a shopping cart. A catch from the 10-yard line earned one football player for 24 hours, and each additional ten yards back added another player, up to ten. The players said they could each eat 20,000 calories, and Jimmy said ten of them could eat enough to send the group home a week early.

Juan, who said he had never played football growing up and felt a lot of pressure, made the first catch. More catches brought the total to three. Eldin then missed a throw worth six players, thrown by ECU quarterback Mitch. Jackson made the final catch, bringing the roster to seven. They chose the biggest, hungriest players. The players ate thousands of calories quickly, then got very sleepy, and the 24 hours ran out while several were asleep. A coach came in to clear them out.

Next, Jimmy took Juan away for a few days to compete in a "Strangers Chained" video. Jimmy said he wouldn't spoil the ending. Juan's return gave the group a big boost of energy, and the narration says they quickly got back on track. Teammates said, "You can't not like this guy."

Day 50: Families Inside the Store

On day 50, the contestants' families spent 24 hours in the store. They brought energy and food. One contestant said his wife's cooking was probably the best they had eaten in four months, and the families ate as much as they could. Jimmy says the families had a bigger impact on the calorie count than any other group, "by far." When they left, the store went quiet again. One contestant said he had been dreaming about his family ever since and could still hear his kids calling "Daddy." Another said he had come in 140 days earlier and wasn't leaving until he made his family proud.

30:27

Juan's Injury and the Patio

The group pushed their workouts hard, and Juan got hurt. His foot and ankle swelled, and a teammate said it looked "like a pineapple." Teammates said he didn't really listen when they told him to ice it or rest. John found it still inflamed and kept him off the treadmill. Juan still couldn't sit still, so the others pushed him around in a shopping cart. Jackson said he had "gained an uncle in Juan" and two brothers in Reyhan and Eldin.

The group then discovered the dock was locked. The narration calls the dock their only connection to the outside world. Jimmy then revealed why: in response to their wish to get some direct sunlight, the red line had been moved outward to create an outdoor patio with a Blackstone griddle. The contestants rated it twenty out of twenty. Jimmy warned that day 60 might be "the hardest thing ever."

The others then launched "Operation Heal Juan." This included English lessons that also kept him sitting still, smoothies, and a swimming pool for improvised water therapy. The narration says it "miraculously" began to work, and Juan said his foot was a lot better.

34:18

Day 60: The 100-Mile Treadmill

The day 60 challenge was a "golden treadmill." The store had 2.4 million calories left, and a counter would tick down over 24 hours. Whatever the counter showed when the group finished 100 miles would be removed from the store and given to people in need. If they failed to reach 100 miles in 24 hours, nothing would be removed. Jimmy also handed out Kizik shoes for the run.

Juan started at a pace of seven. Jimmy warned that if Juan pulled a muscle the team would lose a competitor. The group had no plan at first but soon settled on rotating runners each mile, with a refuel station of water and snacks and rest between sets. John, the trainer, said the pace might hold to mile thirty, but "this is four marathons in one." He predicted they would start slowing around mile fifty. The narration says that is almost exactly what happened. Juan mentioned his knee. Another contestant said he had never run this much in his life and had run his first mile ever only a couple of days earlier. Cramps set in, and the counter fell below one million.

Messages from family helped push them through. One child said, "I'm proud of my dad." One contestant said he wanted to see his parents, and another talked about getting home to his best friend, Casey. Masseuses were brought in for the final miles. They finished with about 600,000 calories on the counter. Jimmy said a more athletic group had attempted the same challenge and finished with 350,000, and that by all estimates this group had "crushed" it. The 600,000 calories were removed and donated. The contestants estimated that eating it themselves would have taken at least two months.

39:24

Visitors, Tradition, and Getting Under a Million

Jimmy's friends Jim and Monika, competing in a separate video in which they drive a Lamborghini around the world, drove the car into the store. They couldn't leave until they had eaten at least 10,000 calories, and the contestants fed them smoothies and pasta while Eldin took the Lamborghini for a joyride through the aisles.

Afterward, Juan withdrew from the group for several days and barely ate. He had gone to a soccer tournament every year for 25 years and was now missing it. Asked if he wanted to go outside, he said, "I want to go home." Jimmy brought the tournament into the store, and Juan's friends and family ate 55,000 calories that evening. A lot of food still remained. The group was down to things they didn't want to eat, including an onion juice that one of them said smelled like a high school locker room, and seemingly endless beans. Jimmy tried their smoothie of pumpkin protein powder, rice cakes, five servings of maple syrup and a chocolate bar, and called it "not too bad."

When the group talked about cars, with Jackson wanting a sports car and Reyhan wanting an SUV because he wants more kids, Jimmy brought in cars and a challenge. The four plus Jimmy had to finish eight pounds of beans before competitive eater Joey Chestnut finished sixteen pounds, which Jimmy called a world record. The team won by a narrow margin. Joey set a new world record anyway, and each contestant won a new car. With that, the store dropped below one million calories, which Jimmy said meant 75% had been eaten. The cars led to jokes, including a mock police chase of Juan's Silverado with the plate J-U-A-N, and to the group moving shelving to make room to drive inside.

The contestants also talked about what each person contributed. Juan was always up and cleaning. Jackson was the one to look up to in the gym. Eldin always made the others laugh.

Day 100: The Original Contestants Return

On day 100 of this phase, Jimmy brought back the contestants from the first grocery store video. That had begun 189 days earlier, when strangers who walked in to shop unknowingly entered a contest for $250,000. They had one hour to help eat. The group cooked and built a giant table from store items. The returning contestants toured what had changed: "Fort Freezy" from the first video was now a gym, and Xavian's old aisle "doesn't look much of an aisle anymore." Juan said he was happy to see their faces and be together in the store again.

Jimmy then made a correction. Seeing the original group made him realize the four hadn't been inside for 100 days but for 190, because they had waited another 22 days while the store was restocked. The narration says this made them realize they had to get out now.

The Final Stretch, a Proposal Plan, and Awards

The last push included "the last day of the blender," frozen eggs and the last of the shrimp. Months earlier they had said that once they got to the steak, they would know they had won, and now they were at the steak. Jackson told the group he had decided to propose to his girlfriend. He was nervous about first asking her parents, so Jimmy set up the call. Her parents said yes right away. Jackson chose an oval ring, and Jimmy also offered Juan, who had no ring, a ring for his wife.

Jimmy then presented awards based on 110 days of data from the contestants' Fitbit Air trackers and the Google Health app, which they had agreed to share:

  • Most calories burned: Jackson, 451,299
  • Most hours slept: Eldin, 1,054 hours and 4 minutes
  • Most calories cooked: Reyhan, 2,011,555
  • Most steps taken: Juan, 2,735,000

Each also received a lifetime subscription to Google Health Premium with a personal health coach.

With two days left, fewer than 50,000 calories remained. Almost 4.3 million had been eaten, and only the 6,614 from the freezer incident had gone to waste. Reyhan made the final meal around bread, which he said his mother had taught him to make. He had also saved toilet paper rolls for the group to "TP" the store, a callback to an earlier moment when they had thought they were going home. The narration frames it as restoring a memory of where they came from rather than mindless destruction.

The Last Bite

Jimmy says the last day came after more than 200 days, with fans standing in the rain to watch. Exactly 3,882 calories remained. Jimmy noted that 202 days earlier these four men had walked into the store to buy food, and had since outlasted more than 90 people. Surrounded by family and a chanting crowd, they ate the last bite and were told they were free to leave.

In a closing voiceover, Jimmy calls the project one of the craziest social experiments in history: total strangers trying to outlast each other in a grocery store, and then four of them staying to eat their way out. He then hands the conclusion to the contestants. On their last night they said they didn't know what stepping back into life would feel like after being together 24 hours a day with no one else. One said he couldn't have done it with anyone else, and the others noted they had arrived not knowing each other and were leaving as "best friends forever." Jimmy announced they had won one million dollars, and they reunited with their families. One child asked, "We go home now?" Jackson then proposed to his girlfriend in front of everyone, and she said, "Yes, I do."
