Jimmy's 30-Day No-Food Challenge Ended on Day 14 With Gordon Ramsay

Open on YouTube ↗
Overview

Jimmy set out to eat no food at all for 30 days, drinking only water, while doctors checked on them every day. The video follows that attempt day by day. It records the weight loss, the fatigue, a campaign of temptation from friends, and the moment the fast ended after two weeks, in a kitchen with Gordon Ramsay.

The Rules and the Stakes

At the start, Jimmy weighed 220 pounds and said that "no food" was meant literally. The only thing going in their mouth for the rest of the month would be water. Jimmy called it the hardest they had ever pushed their body and told viewers not to try it at home. A team of doctors monitored vital signs every day, according to Jimmy, to make sure the fast didn't lead to a heart attack or something worse.

The penalty was simple. If Jimmy ate food for any reason during the 30 days, Chris would get to shave their head. Chris said right away that there was no way Jimmy would last 30 days. The friends cleared every bit of food out of the house, because Jimmy said they didn't want "a single calorie of food" left in it. Chris also smashed the plates and, by accident, the microwave. The group was strict about the rules. When someone asked whether swallowing a fly by accident would count as eating, Jimmy answered, "Uh, probably."

Days One and Two: Working on an Empty Stomach

The first night mostly felt odd. Jimmy noticed the missing bedtime snack. The next morning the usual routine of eating breakfast first was gone, so Jimmy went straight to work. The weight was about the same as the day before, which Jimmy had expected.

Day two was spent filming a separate video, in which a man would try to spend 100 days inside a circle. Jimmy found that filming on an empty stomach was much harder than it sounded. After roughly four or five hours of shooting, they felt drained and wanted to go to bed. The friends had already started tempting Jimmy. Chandler sat nearby with McDonald's and blew the smell in Jimmy's direction. By the end of day two, Jimmy admitted to being really hungry.

Days Three to Six: Weight Loss, a Headache, and a Blood Test

Jimmy said many people describe days three through six as the hardest. For the most part, Jimmy felt fine, just a little sluggish and tired. The scale showed 2.5 pounds lost in one day. Jimmy called that "pretty crazy" but also linked it to a large bowel movement that morning.

On day three, Jimmy did a photo shoot for their snack brand, Feastables. Being around the chocolate made Jimmy hungry. The photographers wanted a shot of Jimmy biting a bar, so Jimmy called Chris to ask permission and promised to spit it out. Chris said that was fine as long as Jimmy had a shaved head in the picture. In the end, Jimmy only pretended to bite the chocolate. Jimmy also described how quickly their mood could change: in the morning they had felt it wasn't too hard, and by later that day they felt they badly needed to eat.

On day four, Jimmy woke up with a headache. The doctor said it was normal and should go away in a day or two. Jimmy spent most of the day in bed, but still weighed in and found they had lost another half pound. By day five, Jimmy weighed 212.2 pounds, which was three pounds less in 24 hours. That day Jimmy also had blood drawn, partly to prove to viewers and to Chris that they hadn't eaten. The doctor said the main thing to look for was the hormone leptin, which would show whether Jimmy had been eating or not. The results would take a couple of days.

Day six was a surprisingly good day. Jimmy didn't want to get cocky with 24 days still to go, but said they were beginning to think the challenge was actually possible. The scale showed 210 pounds even, and Jimmy compared the falling line to "Bitcoin this year." After going back to the circle video and talking loudly for a long time, Jimmy was exhausted and took a nap in the contestant's house before filming wrapped up.

The Friends' Campaign of Temptation

Throughout the video, the friends tried to break Jimmy, since that was how they would get to shave Jimmy's head. Early on, they announced a "surprise" that Jimmy took to mean torture. They rented an ice cream truck, put it on Jimmy's credit card, played its music outside the house, shouted Jimmy's name, and threw ice cream at the windows until one broke. Jimmy pointed out that the house was being rented from a friend. Because a house with an open window didn't feel safe, Jimmy spent that night at a friend's place.

The temptation kept coming in smaller ways. On the night of day six, around midnight, the friends invited Jimmy to hang out while they ate nachos. Jimmy said they were seriously thinking about shaving their head just to eat some. The friends offered the nachos, and Jimmy decided to stick with water.

The End of Week One and the Growing Toll

Jimmy marked one full week without food by crunching on ice balls. Jimmy admitted the joke was funnier in their head after seven days without eating. The weigh-in showed almost 12 pounds lost in one week.

Day seven was busy. At the studio, Jimmy came across Oreos someone had left out, said they wanted one badly, and asked a studio worker to eat it instead so Jimmy could watch. Jimmy also toured sets for an upcoming video, including a chocolate factory set with a chocolate fountain and the large amount of chocolate needed to fill it. The candy made Jimmy so hungry that they asked why this had to be filmed during the fast. Later, Jimmy and Karl filmed with Quackity for the rest of the day. Jimmy said the challenge was clearly starting to wear them down.

When the friends invited Jimmy to play basketball, Jimmy went even while calling it probably a horrible idea. Jimmy air-balled the first shot. Nolan noted that Jimmy had much less energy and was making fewer shots. Jimmy said they hadn't realized how weak not eating had made them, though they still scored a few baskets. Around this point, Jimmy also had their first bowel movement in over a week. Jimmy looked it up and found it was apparently normal. Recording for the reaction channel drained Jimmy further. They said they also hadn't slept well and could barely keep their eyes open, and they ended up sleeping on a couch at the studio.

New York and a House Full of Food

On day ten, Jimmy flew to New York to appear on stage with someone named Mark (the transcript renders the name as "Mark Rober") in front of what Jimmy called a lot of very important people. Jimmy said they were tired and hadn't eaten. Someone they met there said they hadn't known it was scientifically possible to survive that long without food. During the talk, Jimmy handed out chocolate bars from their new chocolate brand to the audience. Jimmy said the talk went well and then went to bed exhausted.

While Jimmy was away, Tareq let the friends into the house, and they spent the whole day filling it with food. One of them ate throughout the process. They were confident Jimmy would come home, eat, and lose the bet. When Jimmy got back, Tareq admitted to filming the whole thing. Jimmy found food everywhere, including in the bed, said the house smelled great, and asked how badly the friends wanted to shave their head. On a FaceTime call, Chandler asked whether Jimmy was hungry. Jimmy said yes: the stomach pain had mostly gone away, but now it was throbbing. Chandler asked whether Jimmy had checked under the toilet seats, and Jimmy said that now they definitely wouldn't.

Days Twelve and Thirteen: The Chocolate Factory and the Doctor's Concern

Around day twelve, Jimmy filmed the chocolate factory video while watching other people eat chocolate. Jimmy lost track of the day and wasn't sure whether it was twelve or thirteen. Jimmy said the day got worse from there. They were so nauseous that they couldn't film for more than 20 minutes without sitting down. At one point they felt they might throw up and nearly scrapped the chocolate factory video because their energy was so low. By evening, Jimmy felt close to passing out and went to see the doctor.

The visit gave mixed news. The hormone results had come back and showed the fast was going well, which also answered the question of whether Jimmy had been secretly eating. Chris said he believed it, since he had seen Jimmy fall asleep eight times that day. The doctor said Jimmy's electrolytes still looked good but that they were a little concerned about Jimmy's energy level. The doctor added that if Jimmy started feeling worse, they could always break the fast for safety. Chris joked that they could also "break the hair off" Jimmy's head. Jimmy said this was the reason long fasts need medical supervision: Jimmy didn't know what they were doing and was following the doctor's advice. Jimmy also admitted that Chris's suggestion to shave, eat, and feel better was tempting at that moment.

Vegas and Gordon Ramsay

On day thirteen, Jimmy had to fly out and weighed in at home first. They were 18 pounds below their starting weight after two weeks. The destination was Las Vegas, to film a short clip with Gordon Ramsay for one of Jimmy's videos. Jimmy said all the flying was really catching up with them. On the plane, they turned down peanuts from a flight attendant. Just after midnight, which made it officially day fourteen, Jimmy noted the hotel room was full of snacks and that Nolan wouldn't stop eating them in front of Jimmy. Jimmy went to bed hungry.

During the shoot with Ramsay, Jimmy said they tried to stay upbeat but were "dying on the inside." Afterward, Ramsay said he wanted to cook something for Jimmy for his own channel. Jimmy explained the dilemma. Karl could taste-test for the channel, but Ramsay was "one of the greatest chefs to ever live," and turning down his food would mean passing up a golden opportunity.

On the show, Scrambled, Ramsay introduced the episode as cooking his favorite dish, scrambled eggs, with close friends. Jimmy explained the challenge and the head-shaving penalty and said they would try not to eat what he made. Ramsay asked whether Jimmy was really going to refuse, and Jimmy said it depended on how good it looked. Ramsay asked how someone fasts for 30 days. Jimmy replied that they weren't a doctor and didn't want to tell people how. Ramsay also asked when Jimmy last went to the bathroom. When the breakfast sandwich was ready, Ramsay urged Jimmy to take at least one bite. He said Jimmy would be the first person in his entire career who didn't eat something he had cooked from start to finish.

One Bite, and the Haircut

Jimmy agreed to one bite. Jimmy said that, technically, they would have to spit it out because of refeeding syndrome, but they still wanted to taste it. When asked directly whether this meant breaking the fast, Jimmy said yes. Jimmy called the sandwich the best thing they had ever tasted in their life and added that you can't just take in a flood of carbs after 14 days without eating. Jimmy also said they felt energized just from having it in them.

Jimmy called Ramsay a "jerk" for making them shave their head and accepted the penalty: "A deal is a deal." Chris started shaving, and the friends commented on how much hair came off and how thin the sides looked. Partway through, Jimmy said they no longer trusted Chris with the razor, and their barber finished the job. Jimmy said this would be the only time viewers saw them like this, because they planned to wear a hat for the next five months. The video ends the way it began, with a plate thrown away because "you won't be needing these anymore."

The challenge was called a 30-day fast, and it lasted 14 days. By then Jimmy had lost about 18 pounds, was dealing with nausea and constant exhaustion, and had been told by the doctor that the fast could be stopped for safety. It ended in Ramsay's kitchen.
