What Alexandra Leclerc Carries in Her Jacquemus Bag: Mementos, Mexican Candy, and a Chewed-Up Tiger

Overview

In Vogue's "In the Bag" series, Alexandra Leclerc empties a Jacquemus bag item by item. Almost every object turns out to have a story behind it, whether it's tied to the engagement, the wedding, the family's dog Leo, Alexandra's mother, or a few small collecting habits. Alexandra claims to travel light, and the contents of the bag say otherwise.

A Bigger Bag Than Usual

The bag is a Jacquemus piece that Alexandra calls one of their favorites, describing it as "very summery" and singling out its material. It is larger than usual for them. Alexandra says they normally prefer "really tiny bags, the ones that are very unpractical and can't carry anything," and yet always manage to cram a lot into them. That habit carries over to this bag.

The everyday essentials, by Alexandra's own account, are few: a hairbrush, a lip balm, a small snack, and a little notebook. Everything else in the video goes beyond that. Later Alexandra says, "I think I just really take the bare minimum with me," and then adds, "Clearly."

Mini Mannequins From the Engagement Night

The first item is a gift from friends: miniature mannequins dressed in the outfits Alexandra and Charles Leclerc wore on their engagement night. The friends had commissioned the same kind of figures of their own wedding outfits, and they gave this set to the couple during a visit to Abu Dhabi. Alexandra explains that the engagement night mattered for a second reason, because it was also the first night the couple spent in their new apartment after moving in. Alexandra calls the gift "really thoughtful" and says the couple now want a similar set made of their wedding gown and wedding suit.

Mexican Candies, Stocked Up Once a Year

Alexandra always carries Mexican candies, specifically Pelon Pelo Rico and Fritos Sal y Limón. Alexandra's mother was born in Mexico, and these were her childhood candies. She first bought them for Alexandra on a family trip to Mexico when Alexandra was around ten. The obsession has lasted. Each year, when the family goes back, Alexandra buys enough to last until the next visit.

Alexandra describes the flavor as "definitely a funny taste," unlike the sweets people are used to in Europe and "a little bit spicier," and recommends eating them with guacamole "or with anything."

The Camera Behind Both Instagram Accounts

Alexandra's camera goes everywhere, including museums and events. It is used for practically every photo posted on Alexandra's main account and on a separate art account. Alexandra calls it "the best one" in their opinion, without naming the model in the video. Alexandra photographs anything "aesthetic" or colorful, such as paintings, views, and especially sunsets.

Two beauty items follow quickly: eye patches and a blush, both of which Alexandra says they "can't live without."

A Name Card From the Civil Wedding

One of the more personal objects is a place card from the couple's civil wedding table. Alexandra explains that it was the first time their new full name was written out. Each guest's card had a small stamp of Leo's face on it. Alexandra remembers the wedding as an intimate day with only family, and says they "got really lucky with the weather."

Living With Leo

Several items revolve around Leo, whom Alexandra describes as a small blond dog, "the cutest thing," whose "one flaw" is how much he sheds. For the past two years Alexandra has been using a lint roller "non-stop." Because Leo is blond, black clothing became a problem, and Alexandra says they hardly wear black anymore. Leo travels with the couple whenever possible, and Alexandra explains why: "it would be sad to get a dog and for him to be waiting at home all day."

The bag also holds Leo's favorite toys. One is a small plush bag of chips bought in Paris. The other is a mini figure of Charles in F1 racing gear, which Leo loves mainly for its squeak. The one in the bag is brand new and freshly unboxed, because the previous one at home has been destroyed. Alexandra jokes that Charles probably doesn't mind his dog chewing on "a mini him": "whatever makes him happy, you know."

The 4 p.m. Cake

Alexandra always keeps a "4:00 p.m. snack" in the bag, a small confetti mini cake. Alexandra admits to having "the sweetest tooth" and to being obsessed with anything sugary. The cake comes from a shop a friend recently opened in Monaco, and Alexandra says that as a result they now "have cakes every day at home."

A Photo With Mom

Alexandra carries a small photo of themself as a young child with their mother. Alexandra isn't sure how old they were in it and points out the tongue sticking out. Because of all the moving around, mother and child see each other less these days, and Alexandra says it is sweet to keep the photo close.

Notebooks Too Pretty to Use, and Borrowed Hotel Pens

Alexandra buys a little notebook almost everywhere they travel and keeps several on hand at all times. A butterfly design means an instant purchase, although lately they have been drawn to other prints. The pink notebook came from a shop in Florence that Alexandra visited with their mother. Alexandra recently discovered a branch of the same shop in Venice and says they could spend hours inside.

The problem, Alexandra admits, is that the notebooks are so pretty they don't dare write in them for fear of ruining them. A few get used, but most stay "mostly empty" and simply live in the bag.

To go with them, Alexandra collects pens taken from one specific hotel, their favorite, because they love how the pens write. Alexandra won't name the hotel "cuz they might never invite me again," and says they're a bit embarrassed about it. Alexandra frames the two habits as a pair: buy a notebook, take a pen to go with it.

Picky the Tiger

From childhood comes a stuffed tiger named Picky, which Alexandra has had since babyhood. Alexandra doesn't know where the name came from. Calling themself someone who has "always been quite soft as a person," Alexandra says they took careful care of the toy, washing it and never pulling at it, and it stayed in perfect condition for years. Then Leo ate its nose. That, Alexandra says, is "the only hard time he knew."

A Still-Wet Painting From Montmartre

On a recent trip to Paris, Alexandra bought a small painting from a woman selling her own work in Montmartre. Only after the sale did the artist mention that the paint wasn't dry yet and would take about a week to dry. Alexandra had to carry it home by hand and says it was worth it. It now rides along in the bag.

Hair Clips With Funny Shapes

Alexandra can't resist hair clips in unusual shapes, such as shiny flowers, cherries, or "anything that is sausage dog shaped." Despite owning many, Alexandra admits to wearing the same one every time. The rest are bought simply because they had to have them.

Protection Against the Evil Eye

Alexandra wears a bracelet they consider a lucky charm, a gift from a friend that they believe came from Turkey. When that bracelet comes off, Alexandra keeps a red string against the evil eye instead. Alexandra admits the string is "not very glamorous" and says people often ask them to remove it at shoots and events. Sometimes Alexandra does, but most of the time they try to keep it on. Alexandra explains, "I just believe in energies in general," and says these objects are a way to protect themself. Alexandra gave Charles the same string, and says the fact that he has one too is reassuring.

The earphones come with a confession. Alexandra went back to this particular model after seeing them on a lot of people, saying they are "very easily influenceable." The appeal is that they don't need charging.

A Collection of Miniature Carousels

The last items are miniature carousels, which Alexandra says they carry daily but brought along mainly to show off. It is Alexandra's all-time favorite style of object, and they are struggling to find others in exactly the same look. The collection probably began with one bought by their mother and grew from there. Alexandra once collected small dolphin statues too, but gave that up long ago and kept the carousels because they look good at home. At home the carousels sit in the middle of the couple's dressing room, among the clothes, which Alexandra calls "very girly."

Each carousel is tied to a moment. One was bought recently for the wedding. Another was the first piece of the collection and, in Alexandra's view, the prettiest. Alexandra values the memories attached to each one and who gave it. Most came from Alexandra's mother, but Charles now knows about the collection, and Alexandra says, to laughter, that he "needs to buy me one in the next few years."
