Inside MrBeast's Five-Day Push to Find Homes for 100 Shelter Dogs

Open on YouTube ↗
Overview

The video sets out a simple goal: take more than 100 dogs that were abandoned or pulled from kill shelters, bring them to one large dog sanctuary, and get every one of them adopted. Jimmy (MrBeast) frames the stakes at the start, saying some of these dogs might have been dead by the time the video was uploaded. Over five days, the team learns which dogs find homes easily and which don't, tries several strategies to place the harder cases, and ends with a single dog left waiting for an adopter.

The setup: staff, advertising, and screening

To show how seriously the team was taking the project, Jimmy describes the operation. There was what he calls an army of trainers and walkers, plus a team whose only job was giving the dogs scratches. To bring in potential adopters, the team says it spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on a statewide ad campaign.

The video stresses that adoption wasn't a free-for-all. Every prospective adopter first went through what Jimmy describes as extensive background checks by an independent third party, meant to confirm they could provide "a safe, stable and loving home."

The first adopters were a couple who already had a dog and wanted a small one as a companion for it. They were introduced to Biscuit, the two dogs played together in the park, and the couple decided to proceed. Other early adoptions followed. Barkley was officially adopted, and one family took two dogs, Charlie and Nugget, after watching them get along.

Day one and day two: a slow start, then a crowd

Day one ended with eight dogs adopted. Jimmy points out what would become a theme of the video: "the cute, fluffy dogs are easier to find homes for." He adds that getting all 100 dogs adopted "could literally take months."

On day two, according to the video, the ad campaign brought in ten times as many people. The team's tactic was to put a cute puppy in visitors' hands as they came through the door, and Jimmy says it seemed to work. Hansel was among the dogs adopted, and one visitor who couldn't choose was told, as a joke, that there was a "buy one, get one free" rule (the dogs were free anyway), and left with two. A board tracked progress, and Jimmy clarifies that an X next to a dog meant it had been adopted, not that it had died.

The roles were divided. Chandler introduced visitors to dogs. Karl stayed in the park with visitors, jokingly described as making sure nobody stole the dogs. Nolan acted as "the closer" who finalized adoptions. The video says roughly 50 other people were also working to place the dogs.

The adoption package and a $10,000 surprise

Each adopter received an extra surprise. When a family confirmed they wanted to adopt Thor, they were told the dog came with free pet food for life and pet insurance for life. The video credits Jinx for the food and Spot for the insurance, and says this covered all 100 dogs, with food delivered to the adopter's door for the dog's whole life. When one adopter asked whether they also got human food for life, the answer was no.

One adopter stood out. She had already adopted six dogs in her lifetime and fell for Zoey right away. After a meeting with her existing dog went well, she was set to care for seven dogs. The team surprised her with $10,000 in cash, on the condition that she promise to give Zoey lots of scratches. She told them she rescues dogs because she loves them and they deserve a good home.

Despite the chaos, 44 dogs had been adopted by the end of day two.

Buffett, the dog nobody chose

The team also noticed which dog families passed over most: Buffett, a dog with three legs who lost one after being hit by a car. Jimmy calls Buffett his favorite and says Buffett might be the hardest of the 100 to place.

With more than 50 dogs still waiting at the start of day three, the team tried a new approach. They let everyone into the park and unleashed the dogs so the dogs could "choose their own family." Several adoptions came out of it, including one family who named their new dog Hershey. The team also ran pranks on visitors. In one, a crew member lay in a kennel pretending to be asleep, then got up and said "guess nap time's over" before going back to "sleep."

More people met Buffett, but the outcome kept repeating. One group chose Tanner over Buffett. Another group was told Buffett was a sweetheart who got around very well, and still said "I can't take him." Jimmy says this made the team sad, and that they spent $50,000 on a marketing campaign built specifically around Buffett.

The video also describes a broader pattern. Almost all the puppies were gone because, as the team says, people aren't looking to adopt older dogs as much. Since older dogs were most of what remained, Jimmy expected the task to get harder the further it went. He explains that some of the dogs came from kill shelters, which he describes as facilities that can't refuse animals, are often over capacity, and have to put dogs down to make room for more.

Day four: Dave Bautista joins the team

On day four, actor Dave Bautista joined. He said he usually adopts dogs himself and already has four rescues, with a fifth possibly on the way. The team had him play along with the pranks by barking and woofing at arriving adopters as if he were a dog. When those adopters turned out to be kids, Jimmy stopped the bit early. The adopters received the food and insurance package, plus a painting whose back carried a joke message from Dave: "I hate Guardians of the Galaxy."

According to the video, adoptions went faster than ever once Dave was there, and one visitor took two dogs who couldn't be separated. Soon the team was down to the last ten, the hardest dogs to place.

Dave kept going back to one dog, Doralee. He said she reminded him of his own dog Penny, that he hated seeing her without a home, and that if no one adopted her, he would. Jimmy said he would hold Dave to it.

Buffett got another chance that day. A visitor said their grandfather had owned a three-legged dog, asked to take Buffett for a walk, and didn't seem bothered by the missing leg, saying they'd seen three-legged dogs do pretty well. Buffett warmed up to them right away, and they decided to adopt him. The team also had a custom prosthetic leg made for Buffett and gave the adopter $10,000. The crew then took down Buffett's kennel, which Jimmy called bittersweet.

Day five: the last ten

Day five began with ten dogs. Jimmy noted that fewer dogs meant fewer options for visitors, so he expected the remaining placements to be harder. Two of his friends came to adopt: Neil, introduced as someone who lost $1,000,000 in their videos, and Dustin, who lost $10,000 about five years earlier. During this segment Jimmy says he has spent more than $2 million on getting dogs adopted and doesn't plan to slow down. The sponsor segment that follows also mentions that the sponsor gave the shelter $50,000. Dustin took Jet out to play and decided to adopt, renaming the dog Zeus. Both friends were also given checks.

As more visitors arrived, some began showing interest in the older dogs, which the team had hoped for. One adopter who specifically wanted a shepherd took Dexter, and a family with two boys chose a female dog. Around the same time, the team started receiving videos from earlier adopters showing the dogs in their new homes, including Cooper and Hazel.

The final two: Star Crunch and Doralee

Eventually only Star Crunch and Doralee were left. Visitors kept arriving, but the two dogs didn't match what they wanted: one wanted a small dog, another a younger dog, and the team had neither left. Jimmy says they worried the two might not find homes and could only wait.

When a visitor finally met both, they compared it to "the last pick in dodgeball." The team notes that Star Crunch can be very shy with new people but went straight to this visitor, who adopted her. That left Doralee alone, and the crew remarked that she seemed to realize what had happened. With only one dog left, the whole building became her kennel, and the team gave her extra attention while waiting.

Eventually one more person came in. Jimmy explains that Doralee had been rescued after being abandoned during Hurricane Idalia. She took to the visitor, who decided to adopt her. Because of Dave's earlier pledge, the team called him for his approval, and after seeing that Doralee looked happy, he gave it. For adopting the 100th dog, the adopter received $20,000 in cash, along with a request to promise to always take care of her.

Closing: donations to the people who helped

To finish, Jimmy thanked the sanctuary for hosting the project with a $100,000 donation so it can keep finding homes for abandoned dogs. The team also brought wheelbarrows holding about $50,000 for the staff who helped, which Jimmy says was on top of what they had already been paid. The video ends with every dog adopted. Doralee, the one Dave had promised to take if nobody else did, was the last.
