Darcy's Ten-Minute, Five-Floor Escape to Save $250,000

Overview

The premise is stated in the first seconds. A ten-minute timer has started, and when it reaches zero, a room "full of money" a short distance away will explode. The only person who can stop it is Darcy, a man in a straitjacket at the top of a five-story tower. To save the money, he has to free himself, get down through all five floors, and press a red button before time runs out. The stake is a quarter of a million dollars.

Jimmy, the host, presents the video's form as part of the challenge. He says the video is "completely real time," exactly ten minutes long, with no cuts. He calls it the team's "first ever real-time shoot." That choice shapes how the whole video plays.

Why Real Time Matters

Jimmy comes back to the no-cuts rule several times. As extra proof, he says that from a certain point the viewer will see an unbroken shot of Darcy in the corner of the screen for the rest of the video.

The format leaves slow and awkward moments in the video. During the boulder room, Jimmy says that when someone works this slowly, "we cut it out," but here "we literally can't cut it out." Near the end he adds that they normally do cuts and edits, but now "everything I'm saying is making it." He even apologizes on camera for forgetting lines while he is stressed. The video closes on the same idea: "We have to make this video exactly 10 minutes."

The Top Floor: Straitjacket, Fire, and a Lock

Darcy gets out of the straitjacket so quickly that Jimmy asks how he did it. Jimmy then says that doesn't matter, because the next floor is "twice as hard to escape."

The next obstacle is a metal cage, and fire is part of the setup. Mack reacts with surprise: "You put fire in there?" To get out, Darcy must use a lock pick that is on the floor. The narration explains that even with the tool, picking a lock takes some fidgeting. He has to line up all three pins inside the lock exactly.

This step goes slower than the onlookers want. Jimmy notes that a full minute has passed and Darcy is still in the first room. He reminds viewers that all five floors and the button are still ahead. Mack says the wait is causing "so much anxiety." Darcy eventually picks the lock and starts down a rope.

Floor Four: The Glue Room

The fourth floor is covered entirely in glue. Darcy can walk across it or cross on monkey bars, and Jimmy strongly advises against walking. Jimmy calls it "the stickiest glue in the world." He says he isn't joking that Darcy would lose his shoes if he fell in.

Darcy goes across the monkey bars. He starts to spin for a moment and the onlookers worry, but he never touches the floor. Jimmy declares him "glueless." About two minutes have passed when he reaches the exit hatch.

Floor Three: The Boulder and the Dull Machete

Darcy is visibly tired when he arrives, saying "Oh my God, boys, I'm so tired." The third floor holds a giant boulder at the top of a ramp, held back only by two ropes. A machete is provided, and Jimmy hints that Darcy will need it to leave the room. Jimmy expects this floor to be "pretty simple." It turns out to be the biggest time sink in the video.

Darcy cuts the ropes very slowly. He complains that the knife is "so dull." Jimmy explains that one of the ropes will take longest because it is so thick. With under seven minutes left, the onlookers are openly frustrated. Jimmy says Darcy is behind, and at one point that he has spent a whole minute on a single rope. Mack asks Jimmy why he found "the slowest man possible at cutting a rope." Jimmy remarks that Darcy is a world-class escape artist who apparently is not the best at cutting ropes.

Asked what will happen when the second rope is cut, Jimmy says something crazy will happen. He guesses the boulder will go through the window. Darcy finishes cutting and pushes the boulder down the ramp, and everyone is told to brace and back up.

Then comes another twist. Darcy is told to clip a rope hanging from the ceiling to a latch on the front of his pants and to make "100% sure" it is connected. He steps to the edge, turns around, and jumps. He is lowered by a crane with exactly five minutes left. The descent doesn't go smoothly. Jimmy yells to stop the crane several times and jokes that the crane operator must be drunk.

Floor Two: The Laser Maze

Jimmy calls the second floor "by far the hardest yet." Darcy has to get through a laser maze, and touching any laser will make the money explode instantly. Darcy reacts to how many lasers there are.

Jimmy reads a sponsor segment while Darcy works through the maze, keeping his promise not to cut. The ad keeps getting interrupted by updates. Mack reports that Darcy is halfway through and then on their side. Jimmy says he is struggling to remember his lines. Darcy clears the maze without setting anything off and jumps into water below.

The Final Level: Four Valves Underwater

The last floor is filled with water. Darcy must open four valves, one in each quarter of the room, to drain it. Then he can leave through the front door and press the button. Jimmy frames the question as whether Darcy can hold his breath long enough to open all four valves in time.

At first, Mack and Jimmy shout instructions such as "turn the knob." Then Jimmy changes his mind: "Actually, don't help him. Let's see if he's smart enough to win the money." Darcy opens one valve. He then goes back to the valve he had just finished, and the others shout at him to do a different one. Jimmy estimates this cost about 30 seconds. With three minutes left, Jimmy says Darcy "could do this" if he hurries.

Mack checks the other side of the room to confirm valves are opening. Jimmy calls out "two down, two to go." Jimmy says he can't imagine how exhausted Darcy must be. With about two minutes and ten seconds left, Darcy is still in the water. Shortly after, he finishes all four valves with about a minute and fifty seconds remaining.

The Stuck Door

The final door brings one more setback. Jimmy warns Mack to step back to avoid getting soaked when it opens. He also tells Mack to hide behind sandbags in case Darcy fails and the bomb goes off. Darcy has to unscrew all the latches on the door, but it won't open. Jimmy explains that the door is stuck because the water pressure is still too high. Darcy has to wait for more water to drain.

The clock keeps running: "almost a minute," then 45 seconds, then 30. Jimmy says flatly that Darcy can't get the latches off "to save his life." At one point Jimmy says, "this is it. He's going to fail," and that Darcy can't work out how to open the door. Water starts coming out of the front door, and Darcy eventually gets it open enough to slide through. Jimmy tells him to slide through and hit the button, and he does.

The Result

According to the narration, Darcy won with 19 seconds left. The team moved the money away from the bomb and asked him what he would spend it on. His answer surprised everyone: "I'm having a baby tomorrow." Then, Jimmy says, "we blew the building up." The video ends with the explosion and a reminder that it had to be exactly ten minutes long.
