Overview

A streamer playing Monster Hunter Wilds for the first time took on the challenge of going on a hunt without using any weapons, in order to "learn the basics of hunting." The target was Arkveld, a monster known for its chain-like appendages. Declaring that "this time, my main weapon is the environment," the streamer fought using only rockfalls triggered by collapsing the terrain, bombs, poison, and traps, and finished the hunt with a capture.

Using Pillars and Rocky Outcrops to Knock It Down

The first area has three pillars that can be toppled. The streamer lured Arkveld near each pillar in turn, then brought the pillars down on it to knock it over. While it was down, they used items to pile on damage. They toppled the second pillar in time with Arkveld's attack where it extends its arm toward the hunter, and in between, they set and detonated bombs and threw poison smoke bombs.

At the third pillar, wanting to blow up a fragile rocky outcrop next to it as well, the streamer lured Arkveld so it would fall near that spot. While it was down, they placed bombs near the outcrop and brought it down. Judging that there would be no chance to knock it down again for a while, the streamer used up all their Large Barrel Bomb+ here. They rated the bombs' damage as "not to be underestimated."

Inside the rocky outcrop were small fulgurite crystals, which they said also contributed significantly as a source of damage. According to the streamer, fulgurite is a crystal that is occasionally found on Earth too, formed along the path of a lightning strike by the heat of a powerful bolt. The streamer feels that one of the game's great appeals is that the terrain is designed to fit each region's environment and can be put to real use in combat.

Restocking at Base and Preparing on the Move

With their items running low, the streamer returned to base for a while. They said they find the quiet moments that come amid the hectic combat calming. After sorting out their gear, they packed their pouch with as much poison and as many bombs as they could, then set out again on their Seikret.

The next spot also had a fragile rocky outcrop. When they blew it up with bombs and caught Arkveld in the rockfall, the fulgurite crystals inside dealt damage along with the falling rocks, and they also got a knockdown. The streamer described this as "really well done." Since a stretch of travel would follow, they poisoned Arkveld before moving on.

Endemic Life and Turf Wars

At the next location, the streamer found Great Thunderbugs energized by lightning and decided to try using them as a trap later. They also spotted a large monster and explained that turf wars between monsters can be a source of damage as well. However, they judged that it would be of no use at all against this particular opponent.

There was also some time spent waiting for Arkveld to arrive. According to the streamer, sometimes it shows up right away, and sometimes it gets lost and takes a while. Since this wasn't a time attack, they decided to wait it out at a relaxed pace.

The Rockfall-Heavy Area and the Effect of Poison

The streamer greeted the arriving Arkveld with a rockfall and reapplied poison, which had worn off. By the streamer's account, each poisoning dealt close to 400 damage, and since they poisoned it a total of six times during this hunt, poison is also a factor not to be overlooked. This area has five rocks that can be dropped, so they brought them down one after another without wasting time.

While traveling, they combined bombs and poison smoke bombs. You can only carry up to two Large Barrel Bomb+, but including the ones you craft, you can use up to nine. Since crafting can be assigned to a shortcut, the streamer enjoys it as a perfect way to pass the time while on the move.

The following area has three droppable rocks clustered together, letting you hit Arkveld with rockfalls in succession without having to reposition. The streamer called this extremely satisfying and named it as their favorite area.

The Great Thunderbug Trap and the Capture

Judging that Arkveld was starting to weaken, the streamer used up their remaining offensive items. They hit a Great Thunderbug in Arkveld's path with the Slinger to set it off as a trap, and lured Arkveld into it. Finally, they triggered a massive rockfall to deal heavy damage, then placed a Shock Trap and captured it.

Looking back, the streamer described this Arkveld as "a nice, docile, well-behaved one." The breakdown of this hunt was six poisonings, seven rockfalls, and 37 bombs. Of the hunt without ever using a weapon, the streamer concluded that, though short, it was a busy and fun hunt.
