Natural 20s and Multiverse Vows: Inside Michelle and Garrett's Wedding

Open on YouTube ↗
Overview

This short wedding film is mostly music and imagery, but the spoken parts form a clear thread. The vows, guest messages and officiant's words all return to one idea: that the couple's meeting felt fated and rare, and that their love has to be renewed over time.

A "Cosmic Force" and Every Timeline

The film opens with a voice saying they are "a genuine believer that there is some sort of magnetic Cosmic Force pulling us to one another." That idea comes back later in the multiverse imagery of the vows. Partway through, a speaker says they would like to believe that, in a vast universe, the two of them find each other "in every timeline."

The Natural 20

The most developed image in the vows comes from Dungeons and Dragons. The speaker explains that the best possible roll in the game is a "natural 20," and that rolling one is statistically rare and very exciting when it happens. They say this is how they have felt "time and time again" over the four years of the relationship. Each moment together, in this telling, feels like rolling the rarest and best result.

The same speaker admits, with some humor, that it's "no surprise" they can't sleep the night before the wedding. They then praise their partner as "someone who inspires millions of people to be the best versions of themselves." They add that they look forward to seeing their future children's faces when the children first grasp "how truly astonishing their mother is."

Video Messages Instead of a Guest Book

The couple replaced a written guest book with video messages from guests, and several are shown. One guest says they have never seen anyone gush about a partner as much as Michelle gushes about Garrett. Another, admitting to having had a few drinks, calls the couple's YouTube partnership an "absolute power couple" and says it inspires the guest and their partner, Ashley.

The couple also record a message to themselves ten years in the future. One says, "I am so madly in love with this woman," and the other answers, "I love him a lot too." They end by assuring their future selves, "you still got it."

Other short messages include:

  • unconditional love is "the greatest power we possess"
  • a wish that the couple "never stop discovering the fun together"
  • a reminder that "life is long and full of change," with the hope that their love remains a constant

The Vows: "In All the Timelines of the Multiverse"

One vow brings back the multiverse theme: "in all the timelines of the Multiverse and on this plane and every other, I am yours." It ends with "I love you, Garrett."

Love as Something Reaffirmed

The officiant gives the film its most grounded reflection. They note that you do not love someone in exactly the same way all the time, even though most people expect to. "In love as in life," they say, what is promised on the wedding day "must be reaffirmed tomorrow and all of the tomorrows to come."

The film ends on a vow that returns to the Dungeons and Dragons imagery: "I vow to be by your side for every Dragon we slay along the way, wherever we may find ourselves."
